Grain consumption is a sensitive subject for many individuals, which is why additional information is being provided. Most people have eaten bread, pasta, and cereals their entire lives and giving up this food can be psychologically traumatic for some, which illustrates the strong and often inappropriate emotional connection that we have with food.  A goal should be to view eating as a mechanism to fuel the precious vehicle (your body) that conveys you throughout life.

Remember, you can only trade in your motor vehicle, not your body vehicle. With this mindset, we are less likely to be opposed to making any changes that would benefit our body vehicle.

Humans are designed to eat fruits, vegetables, fish, fowl, meat, roots, tubers, and nuts. Consider also that there are no chronic diseases caused by eating these foods. No matter what disease you may suffer from, none of these foods must be eliminated from the diet. The same cannot be said for grains in particular. In a nutshell, grains contain several problematic substances including gluten, lectin, and phytates, and grains also promote inflammation by promoting body acidity, and disrupting proper blood sugar regulation.

Grains contain a substance called phytic acid, which is known to reduce the absorption of calcium, magnesium and zinc from grains. Grains also promote an acidic body pH, which is known to be inflammatory.  Research has now demonstrated that a diet-induced acidic state helps to promote the loss of bone and muscle that occurs as we get older. Finally, while grains are a low-fat food, they contain an elevated ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-6 fatty acids are converted into chemicals the cause inflammation, chronic disease, and pain.

With the above in mind, you may be wondering why we have been told that grains are so good for us? First, whole grains do contain nutrients and fiber, both of which are healthy and anti-inflammatory. However, we get more nutrients and fiber from fruits and vegetables. Second, grains are inexpensive and can be stored easily, so they are profitable for food manufacturers. We are never told that we can get all the nutrients and fiber we require by eating fruits, vegetables, and nuts, and that there is no need to consume grains. It is important to understand that the health conditions discussed above have only been associated with the consumption of grains and legumes (beans) and have never ever been associated with the consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and healthy animal products. Therefore, try to avoid grains, flours, bread, pasta, etc., and try to replace these foods with fruits and vegetables. Sprouted grains are somehow seen as a loophole to refined and whole grains, but this seems unlikely.

All American Favorites: Apples

Americans love apples. Actually, they are our favorite fruit and we probably have Johnny Appleseed to thank for their abundance. His goal was to plant seedlings all across the country but sad to say, he made it only to Ft. Wayne, IN. No matter though, it was great start. Here are some tips to help you enjoy an all-American favorite.

  • Always store apples in the refrigerator. Apples kept at room temperature will spoil 8 to 10 times faster than those kept in cool. Most apples will keep 3 to 5 weeks in the fridge.
  • Apples can be stored for a longer period of time if they don’t touch one another.
  • Apples should be wiped dry before being stored for a long period of time.
  • Some varieties of apples will taste different based on the time of year you buy them.
  • Store apples in a ventilated plastic bag in refrigerator. Avoid storing apples with other fruits and vegetables because they can affect the flavor of other foods.
  • Freeze extra apples when they are in season and flavor is at its peak. It is best to sprinkle them with lemon juice or ascorbic acid to prevent browning.
  • Only slice apples with a stainless steel knife. Carbon will discolor the flesh. To prevent wasting fruit, use a vegetable peeler instead of a knife when removing skins.
  • Core apples more easily by first slicing off a small piece from the top and the bottom, so that you can clearly see the center of the apple.
  • To help baked apples hold their shape, use a peeler to remove a thin strip of skin from around the center. Then bake them in a muffin tin.
  • Apples come in hundreds of varieties. Basically, tart apples are best for cooking, and sweeter apples are best eating raw.

Did You Know?

Smaller apples will stay fresher longer than large ones, so only buy large ones when you plan to eat them right away.

Asian Food Recipes: Korean Food

The greater LA region represents many cultures and cuisines properly, but Chinese, Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese (http://www.asianfoodrecipes.net) enclaves are especially deserving of becoming catalogued and rated. By this I mean, you will find a huge number of restaurants, high turnover rate of restaurants, over a significant geographic region, wide range of foodstyles and high quality levels, and a lot of aren’t English-friendly. i.e. it assists to have a guide or an expert to get the most beneficial food. If someone is born to that cuisine/culture, they have an entry point and expertise which can be the base of a blog.

Even though food isn’t the initial thing you will in all probability think of after you hear the words “North Korea” (you likely think of the widespread famine there or about a particular spectacled dictator), there is certainly a long legacy of North Korean cuisine. Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital city, is dwelling to two renowned Korean dishes: mul naengmyun and Onban.

Korean restaurants ordinarily cover the whole table with dozens of banchan , or little complimentary side dishes to accompany your meal, but Be Bop only supplied numerous plates. But with our order of jeon , an assortment of fried delicacies, we wouldn’t have had room for a lot more besides our major courses.

Korean deep fried shrimp is simple to create and has a thin and extra crispy batter. Korean deep frying mix, which might be located in quite a few Asian grocery shops, is actually a mix of flours and seasonings that make frying basic. These deep fried shrimp (saewoo twigim) may be produced in 15 minutes but are so delicious that I like to serve them as 1 of the primary dishes for dinner guests or unique occasion meals.

From the Korean stall, nicely, I love everything from them. From the Bibimbap towards the Galbi to the Bulgogi, towards the Kimchi Fried Rice, to the Sundubu and now, their newest addition: Ribeye Steak! It really is a substantially-sized steak marinated in Galbi sauce and cooked medium-well. Affordable and delicious.

The gulasch, as expected, tasted far more Korean than Czechoslovakian. It was actually Korean stew, if anything else. It did taste bold and flavorful, as well as the meat pieces had been pretty tender. Unfortunately, the bread dumplings are only for photography purposes as I learned they’ll by no means have it out there.

Korean food is one of the best asian recipes for your home dinner.

It’s always been a common trend for New Year’s resolutions to revolve around healthy living habits, but many are too vague to actually make a difference. Eating better, exercising more, cutting down on junk food… they’re all great ideas, but in order to be effective, they need to be more specific, the more numbers the better.

Here are a couple of goal ideas to help you succeed:

1. Reduce Fast Food Consumption by 50%. Analyze how often you eat fast food, and be honest. Though it’s tasty and cheap, it’s ultra-processed and one of the leading sources of saturated fat and cholesterol. Instead, opt for something that’s still quick and relatively cheap, like a sandwich from a deli.

2. Switch to Organic Produce whenever possible. It may be more expensive, but it’s so much better for you, and may taste better, too!

3. Cut 50% of your budget for junk food. If you’re going to snack, eat things that actually have some nutritional value. Rather than chocolate and potato chips, go for some yogurt or a piece of fruit. Train yourself to crave things that are good for you.

4. Create a manageable exercise regimen for at least 2 days each week. You don’t have to do P90X, but even speed walking a mile before going to work will boost your metabolism.

Want something more fun? Take dance lessons. Play raquetball, basketball, cycle or swim… Anything to get that heart pumping!

5. Eat a salad, wrap or sandwich that contains leafy greens for lunch every weekday. Choose some low-fat dressing, stay away from the bacon bits and excessive cheese, and you’ll start to feel the difference in your digestive system within the first couple of weeks!

Use these suggestions above or make your own to create and maintain healthy lifestyle in 2012.
